Understanding Candida
The second most vaginal infections that a woman can face is a Candida infection. A form of yeast known as Candida Albicans commonly grows in a healthy vagina. This type of yeast can also be found in the rectum and in the mouth of a healthy person. In simple terms, a Candida infection occurs when the amount of this type of yeast in a woman’s vagina (or in a rectum or mouth of a male or female) grows unchecked.
Considering a vaginal Candida infection for a moment, if a woman’s system is out of balance the yeast within a woman’s vagina can end up multiplying rapidly and out of control. The end result will be a Candida infection. A full blown Candida infection, can cause discomfort and result in a noticeable odor associated with the vagina. Moreover, a woman can experience a thick, white discharge from the vagina as well.
Normally, a woman’s immune system and other microorganisms that naturally can be found in the vagina work together to keep the growth of yeast in check and work to prevent a Candida infection. As an aside, when a yeast infection of this nature occurs in a person’s mouth it commonly is known as thrush. The underlying nature of the infection is the same as what is found in a woman’s vagina.
As was mentioned a moment ago, when a woman’s system becomes “out of balance,” when friendly bacteria and other microorganisms in the vagina are not properly functioning, a Candida infection (a yeast infection) is a common result.
When it comes to better understanding what is a Candida infection, it is important to understand what can cause a Candida infection in the first instance. By understanding what can cause a Candida infection in the first instance, steps can be taken to prevent such an infection in the first place. Some of the more common causes of a vaginal Candida infection include:
-
hormonal imbalances
-
other physiological problems or issues that impact the reproductive system
-
pregnancy
-
the use of oral contraceptives
-
engaging in vaginal sex immediately after anal sex
-
using lubricants that contain glycerine
-
using certain antibiotics
-
diet
-
transmission from a sexual partner
-
hormone replacement therapy
-
fertility treatments
When the symptoms associated with a vaginal Candida infection first occur, it is important for a woman to begin treatment immediately. A vaginal Candida infection can quickly be resolved in most instances.
